Historical & Intergenerational Trauma

What your family endured can still shape you: in how you handle conflict, rest, money, affection, or silence. Together we trace those threads with compassion, honoring what your ancestors needed while freeing you to choose what to carry forward.

What you inherited may not be yours to carry

Trauma doesn't have to be spoken aloud to be handed down. A parent who learned to stay alert in a dangerous world may pass that alertness along as simply 'how we are.' Grandparents who survived poverty, war, displacement, or colonization can hand down silence, over-giving, or emotional distance as ways of keeping a family safe. You may have grown up living by rules no one ever told you.

How history lives in the present

You might feel it as an unexplained sense of duty, guilt when you rest or do better than your family did, dread attached to places or people you've never known, or a body that stays on guard long after the danger has passed. Sometimes the weight isn't personal at all — it belongs to a community, a migration, a people. Naming that can bring real relief: it was never only your problem.

Signs it may be running through your family

Unspoken rules

Topics no one raises, feelings no one is allowed to have.

Duty and debt

Living as though your life owes something to what your family paid.

The body remembers

Anxiety, tension, or dread with no clear cause in your own life.

Achievement with guilt

Doing well and feeling disloyal, or quietly hiding it to stay close.

Love through provision

Care shown with money, food, or fixing rather than closeness.

Carrying for others

Being the family's calm one, translator, or caretaker from an early age.

How we work with it

  • ✦Map the family story with curiosity rather than blame.
  • ✦Grieve the losses your family never got to put down.
  • ✦Honor what your ancestors did to survive — and notice what no longer fits your life.
  • ✦Build new rituals and boundaries that keep connection without repetition.

You can love where you come from and still choose where you end up.
